It is utterly amazing to me that it is February 21, 2009 and the display of eMail is so poor. We have advanced in so many ways since I started out with my first Apple IIe sometime in early 1983, but eMail display has stood still.
When eMail first became available, even though I don't remember exactly, I suspect that lines were hard-wrapped at somewhat less than 80 characters due to limitations with displays, etc. As time has gone by we are still suffering from the lowest common denominator syndrome which I will call 'eMail LCD'.
I find this so strange that I am sitting here working on my 24 inch screen iMac, and eMail I posted yesterday got so screwed up due to the 'eMail LCD'.
The response I received from Maarten is interesting because his message shows the following line at the bottom of the page :
-- THIS ENTIRE LINE WORDWRAPS CORRECTLY

and it spans the entire width of my monitor, so apparently bbedit@googlegroups.com has the ability to wordwrap what it wants to...

Through this slot it also includes built-in support for an 80 columns text display on monitors (with the addition of a plug-in 1K memory card, via bank-switching of 40 columns) and could be easily doubled to 128 KB RAM by alternatively plugging in an Apple's Extended 80 Columns Card.
All software keeps advancing to the point that we can do unimaginable things with computers, but eMail display still appears to be in the dark ages.
I don't do a great deal of eMail anymore, and I prefer phone calls when possible because generally I can get things resolved in one conversation. If you don't get the correct answer, you keep re- phrasing it until it sinks in and you get a valid response.
I always found it interesting particularly in dealing with tech support at different companies, that I would ask five questions, and receive a reply to one that didn't respond to the problem. So rather than clearing up all five issues in one conversation, the back and forth eMail would start until I eventually gave up, and moved on.
It would be nice to get a movement going to replace the antiquated eMail display paradigm into something move befitting our new shiny 24 inch monitors.
I am sure someone will come back with "... well, the email is chopped up before google gets it, so its not their fault..."
The point to me is that, it doesn't matter where in the chain eMail formatting gets killed, it would be nice if it got fixed by the posers that be...
