This is undoubtably a question I should be able to answer myself but it may be quicker to ask rather than explore.
Sometimes the ascii palette shows up with the escape character shown as the “$” equivalent and sometimes it shows up with the php equivalent.
For example tab, sometimes it shows as \t and sometimes it shows as $09. I haven't figured out how to make it reliably show in the format I want (usually php, the \t).
